What is a Passport & How to Apply Passport Online, India

I. What is a Passport

Passport is a derived from French word “Passé port”, which means “Passer” means “to pass” + “Port” means “Seaport”. This post intended to give a brief idea on “What is a Passport & types of passport” Indian government issue to Indian Citizens including government officials. A passport is a valid document issued by respective government to its citizens including government officials which certifies the nationality & identity of the passenger for the purpose international travel. Passport is a document which displays standard information about passenger like Name, Date of Birth, Sex, Pace of issue, Date of issue & expiry, Addresses. With regards to passport respective government reserve its rights to hold, cancel the passport at any given time if he/she proved to be a anti-government element.

II. How to Apply Passport online

This section of the post gives you brief note on “How to Apply Passport Online”. In September 2007 Indian Union Cabinet approved new passport issuance system under Passport Seva Project. With this new system centralized passport system came into place which do front-end activities like Passport issuance, Dispatch of passports, Online linking with passport. The applicant can apply fresh/reissue of passport through passport seva system under 77 Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) operating throughout the country. For Fresh or Reissue of passport, you need to fill Online Passport Application via e-form submission (preferred submission). For Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) we need to fill online via e-form submission (Preferred submission). Under the new system for all applicants (including minors) physical presence is necessary at Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) to give their biometrics (finger prints) and photos.

III. How Many Types of Passports

This section of post explains on “How many types of passport in India”.  As per the Indian government & Ministry of External Affairs rules, Indian Passport Department will issue 3 types of passports to its citizens including government officials:

Ordinary Passport

And Ordinary fresh Passport generally issued to Indian Citizens for ordinary travel such as tourist, business & study trips.  This passport type generally denoted by “P”which stands as “Personal”.  This passport cover will be “Blue” in color and it contains 36 or 60 pages as required with 10 years of validity.

Diplomatic Passport

A Passport which has “Maroon” color which is denoted by “D” which stands as “Diplomatic”.  Diplomatic Passport generally issued to Top Rank Government Officials, Indian Diplomats, Indian Judiciary, Statutory Authorities, Diplomatic Couriers & any other persons specifically authorized or deputed by Indian Government.  Effective September 2007 even bio-metrics system introduced to Diplomatic Passport.

Official Passport

Official Passport generally issued to Non-Gazetted government servants or Indian government officials visiting abroad for official business or any other person specifically authorized by the government of India.  Generally this passport is “Grey” in color and denoted by “S”which stands as “Service”.

IV. What are the various passport services a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) do

The following are the services the Indian Passport Department or Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) will do:

a. Issuance of New Passport

An Indian Citizen can apply for Fresh or new passport will be issued to Indian Citizens who are applying for the first time.  Passport Type will depends on the applicant status.

b. Reissuance of Passport

Indian Citizen can apply for Reissue of Passport in lieu of existing passport.  The following are the passport renewal requirements:
1. Change in existing personal particulars.
2. Validity expired within 3 years/ Due to expire.
3. Validity expired more than 3 years ago.
4. Exhaustion of pages.
5. Damaged passport.
6. Lost passport.

c. Miscellaneous Service

Other Misc. Services apart from above 2 services is Police Clearance Certificate (PCC).

V. Fee Structure to obtain Standard Passport

The following fees of passport which is all Inclusive to be paid along with the application form.  The fee can be paid in Cash or Bank Demand Draft in favour of Passport Concerned.  If applicant is paying through Demand Draft, the Name of the applicant , Bank Account No through Demand Draft issue on the reverse of the draft.  Please find below fee structure for normal submission and tatkaal submission.

Normal Submission:

Fresh Passport (36 pages) of 10 years validity (including minors between 15 to 18 years of age, who wish to get a  10 years full validity passport) Rs 1,000/-
Fresh Passport (60 pages) of 10 years validity Rs. 1,500/-
Fresh Passport for Minors (below 18 years of Age) of 5 years validity or till the minor attains the age of 18 which ever is earlier. Rs  600/-
Duplicate Passport (36 pages) in lieu of lost, damaged or stolen passport Rs. 2500/-
Duplicate Passport (60 pages) in lieu of lost, damaged or stolen passport Rs. 3000/-
Police Clearance Certificate/ ECNR/Additional Endorsements Rs.300/-
In case of Change of Address, Name, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, Appearance, Spouse Name, Name of Parents/Legal Guardian Rs.1000/-  [Fresh passport booklet will be issued]



Tatkaal Submission

Fresh Submission

Within 1-7 days of the date of Application Rupees 1,500/- plus the passport fee of Rs.1000/-
Within 8-14 days of the date of Application Rupees 1,000/- plus the passport fee of Rs.1000/-



Replacement of Passport (in lieu of Lost/Damage Passport)

Within 1-7 days of the date of Application Rupees 2,500/- plus the duplicate passport fee of Rs.2500/-
Within 8-14 days of the date of Application Rupees 1,500/- plus the duplicate passport fee of Rs.2500/-



Re-issue cases after expiry of 10 years validity

Within 3 working days of the date of application Rupees 1,500/- plus the passport fee of Rs.1000/-

VII. How many Blank Pages New Indian Passport Contains

As we understood “What is a Passport”, but generally we will have a small doubt how many pages does it contain. It always depend on the type of passport a passenger holds. The following is a general information about “How many blank pages are there in Indian Passport”:
